Sky to expand into Spain?
August 15, 2016
The Sunday Telegraph newspaper has reported that pay-TV giant Sky is looking to expand further into Europe, with Spain as a primary target. Sky already owns pay-TV operations in the UK, Italy and Germany.
However, if Sky were to enter Spain, it would be the first time that Sky has entered a market where it does not have a satellite TV operation.
The newspaper says that for the past year, Sky has had a “secret team” working at its Osterley, west London HQ, and laying the groundwork to launch its OTT service NOW TV into Spain. If this is successful, then Sky could use it as a model to enter other untapped markets where it doesn’t have a satellite presence.
The report says that Sky’s ‘Spanish’ Now TV service would be priced at €10 a month, and thus positioning Sky as a competitive alternative to Netflix.
Only some 27 per cent of Spanish households have a pay-TV subscription, which makes the nation one of the lowest penetrated pay-TV markets in Europe.
